The CRIEF

The CRIEF (Research Centre on Economic and Financial Integration) is a research unit of the University of Poitiers. It brings together approximately 60 members whose research focuses on two thematic axes: Money, Banking, Finance / Health, Labour, Education.

Money Banking Finance

This axis focuses on financial macroeconomics issues and monetary policy (institutional dimension of monetary policy; price dynamics; interaction with macroprudential policies) as well as on financial systems and the risks arising from them (risks and generation of financial market information; individual and systemic risks within the banking sector).

Ongoing projects

Financial analysts and generation of financial information on banks

Whereas the work on forecasts and recommendations from financial analysts mainly concerns industrial businesses and almost systematically excludes the so-called “financial” businesses from its scope of studies, the purpose of this project, financed by the Nouvelle Aquitaine Region, is to capture banks as specific objects of evaluation by financial analysts. On the one hand, the aim is to better understand the effects of analyst monitoring on bank governance and banking risk mitigation. On the other hand, we need to assess the determinants of the information produced by financial analysts, whether in terms of the intensity of banking competition or the orientation of prudential regulation.

Central banks’ unconventional monetary policies and communication strategies: their impact on the economic and financial stability of the Euro zone

After the 2008 financial crisis, the monetary policies conducted by central banks had to be reinvented (negative interest rates, redemptions of financial assets on the markets). The project aims to assess the effects of these new so-called “unconventional” monetary policy instruments on the European Central Bank’s communication strategies. We particularly focus on the timing of the European Central Bank’s decisions to better understand how the rhythm and sequentiality of its announcements can lead to uncertainty and startle economic agents to be more effective.

Health Labour Education

This axis focuses on microeconomic issues and addresses the challenges related to individual trajectories and various forms of mobility (economic, professional, geographical) and their consequences (in terms of employment, salary, health, and well-being). The research also focuses on evaluating public policies applied to the fields of education, labour, and health.

Ongoing projects

Ageing and dependency: connected objects and the care of dependants

One of the major challenges of an ageing population is to strengthen the autonomy of the elderly. Digital solutions can be considered to delay the loss of autonomy (cognitive stimulation), take charge of the loss of autonomy (compensation tools), tackle isolation and maintain social ties (communication and contact tools). This project, with the support of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, brings together regional academic and socio-economic players and aims to measure the impact of connected objects on the dependants’ well-being.

Downgrading: impact on pay inequalities and access to care disparities in France

Making the most of one’s human capital on the labour market is a core dimension of economic and social integration. However, a large part of the population holds a position unsuited to the initial level of education. This downgrading phenomenon can lead to even greater inequalities, and a deteriorated quality of life (health, well-being) for those impacted and the people around them (education of children, for example). CRIEF researchers are attempting to accurately assess this phenomenon in France and Europe (by geographical, sectoral, socio-professional, gender, etc. scopes), to understand its origins and its consequences (beyond conventional measures on employment and salaries), to identify avenues for improving public policies in the training and employment areas.
